This project offered me a true blank canvas. I got approached to do an art installation, free for me to interpret. From windows to ceiling: everything was an option. With bombay as a partner we designed a mural experience inspired by the city, which then inspired a cocktail menu for the summer.
As soon as I swung by the Hoxton Hotel in the city center of Amsterdam, I knew i wanted to make something on those huge windows. Originally I wanted to paint on the windows but because of the scale we landed on stickering.
One of my main focusses in all my work is that I want the art to look like its touched, it needs to feel human, which is why I landed on an art style that combines my digital illustration style and collage elements.
PRIMARY FOCUS
– Should feel like Amsterdam
– Colorful, summery vibes
– Easy to install
– Not overly branded
The canvas for this project was dauntingly huge, so I opted to sketch directly on top of photos I took of the location. This gives me a direct impression of what we’re working with and how the illustrations will interact with their surroundings.
For the design I let myself be inspired by the perfect amsterdam summer afternoon: In the sun, we’re having a cheeky drink or a lemonade, pink sunglasses are on, as the sun wont go down until after 10. Is it a cheese board or dinner? Who knows!
Technically this was a fun challenge aswel, as every “tile” row has different sizes, not t speak about the odd ones next to the stairs. The sketches became a handy guide for install, so it was clear what goes where.
